Why this book?

The concept of Ayurveda is quite foreign to many westerners.

It’s certainly a lot more “mainstream” now then it was when I first picked up Dr. David Frawley’s book “Ayurvedic Healing” in 1989. By then, I had already met with an Ayurvedic doctor who gave me the basics of the practice for my then 16-year-old brain to comprehend.

However, when my husband and I moved from New York City to Sonoma County, CA in 2010, many people who I encountered didn’t really understand what I did. To make it easier, they called me a “nutritionist”.

When I started seeing patients in 2010, most of my focus was on educating my patients on what Ayurvedic medicine was rather than helping to bring balance to their health. At the end of an evaluation, which usually lasted 2 hours, I would get the same question: “Is there a book out there which explains what you’ve just said in the way you explained it?”

There are hundreds of incredible books about Ayurveda which have been written over the past 3 decades ranging from deeply clinical books and cookbooks to the aspirational and esoteric. However, I couldn’t reference a book which was 100% western-minded and approachable for people to not get entirely overwhelmed with the subject matter.

In my former life, I was responsible for managing projects in Advertising and Branding. I wrote creative briefs to help bring life to our client’s rather complex products and services using the talents of our creative writing and art direction teams. It was my job to make complex concepts approachable for the consumer.

My first book, “A little bit of Ayurveda” is a culmination of my 15-year experience as a Program Manager and Account Director in advertising in New York & Washington, DC, and of my second (and preferred) career as a Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist (since 2010).

This book was written with you, the western end-user in mind; finding common analogies and anecdotes to bring this fabulous 5000-year-old body of knowledge into your hands, meeting you where YOU are in your journey of health and wellbeing.
